| Abstract | Median Filtering is widely used for noise removal in image processing applications. The drawback of the median filter is that it removes both the noise and fine details. Generally median filter is used to eliminate impulse noises present in an image. To enhance the operation of a median filter, different adaptive filtering techniques have been implemented and verified. In this paper, the impulse noise elimination performances of Ranked-order based Adaptive Median Filter (RAMF), Center Weighted Median Filter (CWMF) and Progressive Switching Median Filter (PSMF) are analyzed. RAMF algorithm is well formed by employing the PSMF and the CWM filter into an impulse noise detection for effectively reducing impulse noise while preserving image details. In addition, the RAMF algorithm presents a quite stable performance over a wide variety of images. Experimental results indicate that the RAMF outperforms other variations of median filters by means of computational efficiency also. In these filtering techniques, the impulse noise is removed by applying appropriate median of the window but they cannot give much preferred output to images corrupted with Gaussian noise. | |
